Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and drive to Nyungwe National Park.
On the 1st day of your safari, you will be picked up by your guide/driver upon arrival at Kigali International Airport who will brief you about the safari and after proceed with your transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park in the southwestern part of Rwanda.
Nyungwe national park covers a total surface area of 1020 square kilometres of tropical rainforest. As part of the national park, you can also access the famous Nyungwe rainforest, which is one of the largest tropical rainforests in the entire continent of Africa.
You will have lunch enroute to the national park. After arriving in the park, you will need to check into your accommodation facility/lodge where you will be staying for the night and for dinner.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and Visit Gisakura Tea Estate.
Wake up and have an early breakfast and after proceed to the Park’s headquarters in Uwinka where you will be briefed by the park’s head ranger and placed in trekking groups of 8 members per group. It is important to keep in mind that chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest national park begins at exactly 8am, thus you must arrive at the Uwinka center by 7am in order to participate in this activity. Depending on how long it takes you to locate the chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest national park, chimpanzee trekking can take between four and six hours or even more, depending on how long it takes you to locate them in the park. After the chimpanzees have been spotted, you will only be able to spend an hour with them after they have been spotted.
After your chimpanzee trekking experience, you will return to your lodge for lunch and relax for a while.
After lunch you will head to Gisakura Tea estate. Here, you will be taken through a series of steps that are involved in the growing, harvesting, processing, and packaging of tea. After the experience return back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Nyungwe Canopy Walk and Transfer to Akagera National Park.
Get up early in the morning, have your breakfast, and then head back to the park’s headquarters at Uwinka Centre once you have finished breakfast. This is where you will begin your hiking trip, which will lead you to the Canopy Walkway. The Nyungwe Forest Canopy Walk is the most exciting and adventurous activity in Nyungwe National Park. As this is not an activity for those with weak hearts, you must be able to walk along the canopy walkway, which stretches 160 meters long and reaches 70 meters above the ground level of the forest. In Nyungwe national park, visitors can take advantage of the canopy walkway which is designed to allow them to get a panoramic view of the forest canopy from above, allowing them to explore the national park from a different perspective. Furthermore, visitors will also be able to view a wide variety of wildlife in the park, some of which are monkeys, chimpanzees, butterflies, as well as a variety of birds. After return back to your lodge for lunch and later transfer to Akagera National Park.
Upon arrival, check in your lodge, relax a bit as you are preparing for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Morning Game Drive & Boat Cruise.
On the 4th day of your 5 Days Nyungwe & Akagera Safari tour, As soon as you wake up in the morning, enjoy your breakfast and take a game drive along the southern circuit of the national park early in the morning. Experience the beauty of the savanna and landscape that surrounding the park-like setting you can also see wildlife animals such as elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards, rhinos, giraffes, antelopes, and waterbucks among others.
Afterwards, you will return to your lodge for lunch, rest for a short time, and then embark on an evening boat cruise on Lake Ihema. As part of your boat cruise, you will see some of the spectacular wildlife at the park, such as Nile Crocodiles, Hippos, and water birds like the marabou stork, herons, and the African fish eagle. After the boat cruise return back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Community Cultural Tour and Departure.
As soon as you are done with your hearty breakfast, you will be picked up by your guide and will be driven to one of the local communities that live near the Akagera National Park. A variety of cultural tours are offered throughout the year that allow you to participate in a wide variety of activities, including touring dairy farms, sampling honey on combs, and making local banana brew. So, to name a few of the activities.
Have lunch before you head back to the capital.
Later drive back to Kigali City. Depending on your preferences, the driver may drop you off at your hotel or at Kigali International Airport where you will catch your next flight back home.
