Mountain Muhavura

Mountain Muhavura : Known locally as Muhabura to Rwandans, Mountain Muhavura is an extinct volcano that is part of the Virunga Mountain ranges and is also known as Muhabura in the Rwandan language, which means guide in Kirywanda.

There is a caravan of volcanoes in East Africa that are sometimes referred to as Birunga or “ibirunga” which means volcanoes in Kinyarwanda. They are situated along the northern border of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda.

There is a theory that they may be part of the Albertine Great Rift Valley, which rambles north of Lake Kivu in East-Central Africa and spans about 50 miles (80 km) along the borders of the three countries.

Although it is unclear when Muhavura’s last eruption took place, it is believed to have occurred during the Holocene period. At the summit of the mountain, there is a small crater lake. Due to its dense vegetation, mountain gorillas are home to a number of critically endangered species, which are listed on the IUCN red list of endangered species.
